This song was written during and after a special road trip in the South Island of New Zealand. My very good friend, Kyle te Kiwi, lent me his van, which I took from Motueka down to Wanaka and then back up. It was 2009, and it was on that very same road trip that I filmed my Youtube video for A Traveller's Song. An acquaintance from Canada was visiting and making a similar road trip, and she became the muse for the song. Since conception, I have always performed a very fast and rocking version of this song, which always left me feeling a bit weird—like maybe the song wasn't really me or mine. I used to refer to this song as a "chong"—a cheesy song. But, after the first preproduction jams with the guys for this EP, I no longer felt that way. We had a groove that created space for the road and its feeling to shine through, and that carried the lyrics and story to new places. I am very happy with this production.
Stay on the left of the line
This driving is falling through time
I've never felt so alone as I do right now
A map couldn't say where I'm headed
But Sexsmith is singing through the stereo
And something good will come of this sun-flecked West Coast stray
I don't wanna ruin your good time
You don't wanna follow my line
But we'll go and blaze a new trail like old times
<instrumental>
I got your text in Franz Josef
I left my thoughts littered on the roadside
And every mile ahead's somewhere I've never been
Maybe Wanaka's gonna save me
Maybe you just wanted to float free
We'll pass each other as we're both going the same way
I don't wanna ruin your good time
You don't wanna follow my line
But we'll go and blaze a new trail like old times
I've gotta feeling this will be the last time and
You and I will see the views from each other's sides
And we'll go and blaze a new trail like old times
<instrumental>
I don't wanna ruin your good time
You don't wanna follow my line
But we'll go and blaze a new trail like old times
I've gotta feeling this will be the last time and
You and I will see the views from each other's sides
And we'll go and blaze a new trail like old times
